SOBRE

Ciclo de Conversas Design+Multimédia é um ciclo de conferências que se realiza anualmente no âmbito dos cursos de Licenciatura e Mestrado em Design e Multimédia da Faculdade de Ciências e de Tecnologia da Universidade de Coimbra.

Que decorrerá em Abril de 2023, repartida em quatro sessões que terão lugar às quartas da parte da tarde, no auditório do Museu da Ciência em Coimbra. As conferências são abertas ao público em geral e de entrada livre.

Esta acção de divulgação pública fora da Faculdade pretende não só mostrar o trabalho de diferentes profissionais cujo trabalho é amplamente reconhecido, como contribuir para a divulgação do cursos, os primeiros nesta área leccionados na Universidade de Coimbra. O programa é constituído por convidados de diversas áreas (Design Gráfico, Design de Interacção, Web Design, Arquitectura, Teoria do Design, Arte, Ilustração, etc.) repartidos por quatro sessões. Propositadamente se junta, na mesma sessão, duas entidades convidadas (que podem ser individuais ou colectivas) de áreas distintas.

ASTRID STAVRO

Pentagram partner Astrid Stavro is a graphic designer with an international reputation for concept driven design, distilling complex ideas into uniquely simple and emotionally engaging solutions.

Before joining Pentagram in 2018 she directed her own studio in Barcelona for ten years. In 2013 she co-founded the brand and design consultancy Atlas with Pablo Martín. While at Atlas, Stavro led the celebrated redesign of the London-based arts and culture magazine Elephant, where she was Art Director and Contributing Editor from 2013–2017. Other projects include the identity for the Barcelona Design Museum and the menswear clothing label Jijibaba for Jasper Morrison and Jaime Hayon, amongst many others. Her work encompasses brand identities, editorial and exhibition design, wayfinding systems and packaging for clients such as Phaidon, Camper, McKinsey, Barcelona Design Museum, Laurence King, PORT magazine, The National Portrait Gallery, Reina Sofía Museum, Fedrigoni, Wallpaper* magazine and Cahiers du Cinéma.

Stavro’s work has received over 150 international awards. Her work has been widely published and exhibited and Stavro has chaired and judged numerous international design competitions. She has written articles for top international design journals and is frequently asked to speak at conferences across the globe. Stavro has taught at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design and is currently a Visiting Lecturer at the Royal College of Art. She was elected a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale in 2010. Stavro was born in Trieste, Italy and studied graphic design at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design (BA) and the Royal College of Art (MA).

KAREL MARTENS

Martens completed his education at the Arnhem Academy of Art and Industrial Arts (Holland) in 1961. Since then he has worked as a freelance graphic designer, specializing in typography. In addition to commissioned work, he has always made prints and three-dimensional work.

Among his clients have been the publishers Van Loghum Slaterus in Arnhem in the 1960s, and the SUN (Socialistiese Uitgeverij Nijmegen) in the years 1975–81. As well as designing books and printed matter, he has designed stamps and telephone cards (for the Dutch PTT). He has also designed signs and typographic facades for a number of buildings. In 2005 he designed the glass facades of the new part of the building for the Philharmonie in Haarlem; this design was based on a music score by Louis Andriessen.

Among his awards have been the H.N. Werkman Prize (1993) for the design of the architectural journal Oase, and the Dr. A.H. Heineken Prize for the Arts (1996). A monograph about his work, Karel Martens: Printed Matter, was published as part of the Heineken Prize.

Mr. Martens has taught graphic design since 1977, first at the Arnhem Academy and later (1994–97) at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht. In 1997, with Wigger Bierma, he founded the Typography Workshop within the Arnhem Academy of Art, where he shares the artistic supervision of students with Armand Mevis. Mr. Martens was appointed to the Yale faculty in 1997 and is currently senior critic in graphic design.

LUÍS ALEGRE

Formado em Pintura, doutorado em Design. Vive e trabalha em Lisboa, desenvolvendo trabalho artístico e de design bem como editor e professor. Desde a segunda metade dos anos 90 desenvolve projectos que cruzam múltiplas disciplinas, relacionando o design, o vídeo, a edição/publicação de livros de artista e instalações.

Professor nos cursos de Licenciatura em Cinema, Fotografia e Cinema de Animação na Universidade Lusófona de Lisboa até Fevereiro de 2014. Professor no mestrado de Design Multimédia na faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade de Coimbra (Colégio das Artes) até Setembro de 2016.

Director criativo da Ideias com Peso, atelier de comunicação; director de arte do grupo editorial LeYa (área escolar); Editor da Stolen Books – Independent Book Publisher; Editor e Art director da CABIDE – a revista ao vivo. Director do DELLI (Design Lusófona Lisboa); Director da Licenciatura em Design de Comunicação da ULHT, Film and Media Arts Department. Investigador e vice-director do Center for Other Worlds.
